Getting a Baltimore squirrel out of your attic is tough. There are number of repellents that you can use which is discussed below:
• Noise repellent
Squirrels do not like noise. They go to small, dark, enclosed areas that are away from other predators and humans, in an effort to protect their offspring. You may have heard that leaving a radio playing in the attic would get the squirrel out. However, if the squirrel already gave birth to her offspring, she would just endure the noise. After all, the babies are born both blind and deaf so the sound would not bother them.
• Physical repellent
These are traps or cages. Squirrels are very fast creatures and you would hardly ever hear of them entering traps. There are even Maryland squirrels that fly or glide so setting up a trap would not work unless you set it up in a way that it is the only entry or exit for them. However, you risk separating the female from its offspring which would cause more harm than is necessary. If the trap is set up in a way that once the squirrel leaves it cannot return, you risk the survival of its offspring that cannot move in search of food for themselves. They would die of starvation, rot and leave a bad stench inside your house.
• Visual repellent
The dark areas are preferred for Baltimore squirrels when they are creating their dens. This is because they do not want to attract other animals to their offspring. Some would say that you should install flashing bright lights to get the squirrels to leave but again, if the squirrel already gave birth, she would endure the light. Moving the new born babies would be a bigger risk factor for her because she cannot move them all at once. The mother would have to physically move each baby one at a time, risking separation from the others as well as exposing them to the outside elements. Instead, she would just move where the light is less, in another area of the attic.
• Odor repellent
This would work, but only if it is eviction fluid. There are no other scents that would make the Baltimore squirrel leave because while ammonia or apple cider vinegar are very highly scented, if the mother gave birth already, she will just endure these scents for the next 7 to 8 weeks, until the squirrels are fully grown and they can all leave. Eviction fluid however, is made with the urine and gland secretions of raccoons. This would work in getting the squirrel to leave because she would fear that a predator is around who would harm her offspring. Male raccoons especially, are known to kill baby raccoons who are not theirs and then mate with its mother to ensure its bloodline. They are very unpredictable creatures so if they can harm the babies of their own species, then they can harm babies from any species. Fearing for her babies, the female squirrel would look for another location, thus leaving the attic, maybe permanently.
